Disappointing film about a burglar who is caught by a woman who is fatally ill. Clearly based on a book where wrong decisions were made about what was chosen. This creates a somewhat unbalanced fairy tale that is on the long-winded side. Certainly some nice pictures, but that didn't save the film.

Sometimes, especially in dark times like these, you would like to believe in fairy tales. This is one of those, with a great, nay gorgeous, Colin Farrell, who portrays the emotions of the fantastic story with gusto. In addition to beautiful pictures, with lots of snow and ice of course, also bold sentiments, richly larded with mythical elements, on top of which the stars with their eternal light. Anyone who doesn't get excited about this has a heart of stone, or none.

In 1914, a young child is abandoned by his parents in New York when they are denied entry to the US. Peter Lake [Colin Farrell] has become immortal under the care of Pearly Soames [Russell Crowe] and regularly does shady jobs for his mentor. A hundred years later, he stumbles upon a critically ill Beverly [Jessica Brown Findlay] in a burglary break-in and a romance ensues that threatens his loyalty to Pearly Soames and his immortality. Adapted from the ambitious (and long) book by Mark Helprin from 1983, it gives the impression of being a highly compressed version of it, leaving quite a few holes in the story that those in the know will understand better. The romance between the two main characters, as well as the relationship between Peter and his mentor, are insufficiently developed to generate any real interest.
