The Book Thief plot

"Courage beyond words."

After the death of her younger brother, little Liesel is left behind by her single mother with childless foster parents. She can't read or write until her new foster father teaches her this. Amid the horrors of the war, Liesel devours one book after another. She "borrows" the books from the mayor's wife. One day, her foster parents offer shelter to a Jewish person in hiding...

Friendly.

More of a wartime teen movie. The film is nowhere really shocking and does not seem to really want to, but this book adaptation does not only have soft moments. War dramas are generally not really my thing, but every now and then it turns out to be fun.

Nelisse is well cast as Liesel, who really exudes a cute charm and with whom you actually sympathize from the start. The parents and Rudy are also doing fine. Overall, the movie is a great movie with some boring moments.

The ending is strong, but in general the film shows just a little too little real war horror with which you cannot fully feel the heavy life. Other movies do that a little better in my opinion.

From the first scenes it was clear that we were dealing with an expensive production. Not yet a guarantee for a good film, but it does help. And indeed, the film built up slowly but nicely. The story about a girl who was adopted in Germany just before and during the Second World War. A war film that is, but now told from the point of view of the ordinary German who was not a soldier or who had direct contact with the army. And that, of course, was taboo for many many years after the war. After all, good Germans did not exist. So in that respect it is good that this side of the story is also highlighted in a beautiful and well acted film. The film could have been a little shorter though. And I would have preferred that the Germans spoke German.
