Young John 'Pud' Northrup's parents die and orphaned Pud is taken into the care of his old grandparents. Pud and his grandfather become best friends, but Grandpa is concerned for Pud's future as less reliable relatives want custody of him. When a messenger from Death knocks on his door to take Grandpa to the afterlife, he must devise a trick to buy time so he can secure Pud's future.
