The War with Grandpa plot
"Old school vs new cool"
10-year-old Peter is delighted to hear that his grandfather, whose wife has just passed away, is coming to live with him. There is, however, one major drawback: Grandpa has difficulty walking and cannot stay in the guest room, because it is in the attic. Grandpa will now sleep in Peter's room and the boy is driven to the attic. And so Peter decides to declare war on his grandfather by burdening him with irritating stratagems. Unfortunately for Peter, Grandpa also turns out to be an adept prankster, who does not let himself be messed with without a fight.

I also had a great time. The jokes are not always original (far from it) but delivered with conviction. Sometimes funny running gags with that sister (although her role is the least) or with the naked father-in-law. But such a last example can be cheap, but they choose to stretch it out and let people shout, which somehow makes it extremely funny. And so the film is full of extremely stupid but very funny jokes. Not every joke is successful and at the end the film goes on just a little too long, but as a whole this comedy does what a comedy should do.
What I liked anyway was that the father-in-law is not one of those grumpy man who slowly thaws, as you so often see. No, the relationship with the daughter is good, he is immediately lovingly accepted and is grateful for that and even the relationship with the son-in-law immediately has some nuances that are at most somewhat more nuanced. I think that DeNiro's class partly plays a role in the fact that he is able to use his talent to strike the right chord.
As a film it is not very special, visually boring and with decent direction. 3.5*.

A bit of a stupid premise, but in the end it was still a fun movie. Still had to laugh a few times. The cast was also great and the playing time was also good, not too long and not too short. The film is not super surprising, but fun to see.

Very mediocre.
A film for children, that much is clear. All scenes involving youth are cringeworthy and also unnecessary in a film with a title like War with Grandpa. Grandpa is Robert De Niro, who has been seen too often in this kind of bite-and-swallow mediocrity over the last decade. Fortunately, hardly any of that usually remains.
