Mariken plot
The young, curious girl Mariken lives together with the old hermit Archibald in a house in the Waanwoud, far from civilization. Everything she knows about life, she learned from Archibald's books. When Mariken one day has to go to town to buy a new goat, she learns that there is more to life than what can be read in books. The girl also meets some strange figures in the city: the dreaded Black Wauw and her imprisoned nephew Rattejan, the charioteer Joachim and the chilly Countess who rules over the city. They are all interested in the special girl in their own way.
