Marseille, July 1905. Young Marcel Pagnol has just finished primary school. In three months he will go to the lyceum. Three months... an eternity when you're that old. Because it's time for vacation, the real one, the big one. As a child of the city, this long-awaited return to his beloved hills of Aubagne leaves him entranced with happiness. There he finds nature, wide spaces and above all his girlfriend Lili. But his unexpected meeting with Isabelle, a castle lady with a venomous charm, will upset this beautiful summer equilibrium, at the age when the time of carelessness gives way to that of secrets.

In the quadriptych Souvernirs d'Enfance - the youth of the writer Marcel Pagnol in four autobiographical parts - this is the third, after La Gloire de mon Père, Le Château de ma Mère, and followed by the posthumous Le Temps des Amours - of which the latter is also referred to in French with the somewhat ominous title 'Souvenirs d'Enfance inachevé IV'.
Anyone who sees overlap with the two films by Yves Robert has paid close attention, it all seems appealing in form, image and style. The narrative may be different in content, but the only real difference is that the main character is six months older again - if that is noticeable at all. Barratier will certainly have looked at the earlier films and the work of Pagnol himself, which is hard to avoid. In any case, there is actually no creative freedom at all - Pagnol is not spotted in France.
Nevertheless, cliché as it is, the film perfectly fulfills just about the only thing that is really obligatory - inducing that special Pagnol nostalgia that lets you see the smell of romarin, smell the purple of the lavender, feel the crickets, feel the warmth of a carefree and rash youth. As if you are suddenly in the sun-drenched Provence for the holiday, in the middle of the long, cold and wet winter.
