I have the most affinity with the first film ─love around the pool table─, because at that time (1966) I was still chasing my hormones and figuratively speaking, traveled around town and country to calm them down a bit.
I think the second film is about a love that is doomed because of differences in status. After all, he is the secretary of an important man, she is just a courtesan in a brothel. That class difference was unbridgeable in the early 20th century, I suspect.
Finally, the third video is typical of many contemporary relationships. Some people want to eat more than one meal, others throw their ass into the crib as soon as a fart bothers them.

I found the quality of the videos to gradually deteriorate. This episode film is doable, but I don't see myself joining director Hsiao-Hsien Hou's fan club (if it even exists).

A beautiful triptych about love, communication, expectations, ... Love, freedom and youth. Although all three are close together. I was actually hoping for a greater link between the three parts, but it is mainly thematic that the short films are linked to each other. Fortunately, with the same director and main actors, the bond is strong enough.

The first part is really good. Practically no dialogue, the images speak for themselves. Time of love, where love is more than beautiful words. A different approach than one of my favorite films ever: Before Sunrise. There love is created by talking for a long time through a movie. But also from the heart, like here. Sincerely. The other parts perform a little less well, but the level is maintained. The approach is always appropriate and with its own approach. Extra compliments for actress Qi Shu, who is especially attractive in the film.

Three Times wasn't quite what I expected, but I certainly liked it. Beautiful images that speak louder than the dialogues. Sometimes it remained a bit distant, but on the other hand I think that the film can be even more enjoyable on the next viewing. We will see...

A love story spread over three periods with the same actors. Not everything was equally interesting, especially because there was little coherence between the parts. I liked the first part best with the billiards. Little dialogue, but that is not always necessary to feel the chemistry of love. Especially a very beautiful choreography and images mean a lot.

Undoubtedly Hsiao wanted to introduce a certain symbolism, with the first film referring to his own young period of love and loving. Where older generations struggled with cultural obstacles and the current generation no longer knows what true love is.

Nicely done, but I wasn't immersed enough in the whole story. But I certainly appreciate this film.
