A film that is initially melancholy, then revives hope, only to be overtaken by reality: a beautifully filmed emotional rollercoaster!

It is not an easy film, but it is packed with social dilemmas, emotional and relational issues: in my opinion, a must-see for every film lover.

We saw the Nijmegen premiere in LUX, followed by interviews with the actors Joël in 't Veld and Jarne Heylen, director Joren Molter and writer Jaap Robben: very interesting and informative in addition.

13-year-old Brian [Jarne Heylen] lives with his father Maurice [Micha Hulshof] in a shabby mobile home. Father is struggling with rent arrears and sees an opportunity to earn easy money when it turns out that his other son Julien [Joël in 't Veld], who is both mentally and physically disabled, can no longer go to a care institution. Through a ruse, Maurice manages to 'earn' €2,000 if he takes Lucien into his home temporarily. But because Maurice is always busy with all kinds of vague chores during the day, Brian is stuck with a brother he barely knows. He gets help from Emiel [Valentijn Dhaenens], the temporary neighbor. Not much story, but fortunately also little sentiment, although it would have been nice if Molter had managed to get Heylen to act a little less mechanically. In 't Veld (who only has a physical disability) is fantastic and the blossoming bond between the brothers has a few striking moments, but all in all this is a sad, at times somewhat gloomy film.

To be honest, I thought it was a pretty uncomfortable movie. Brother Lucien's disability is very confrontational and is constantly present. It's a good thing that we are presented with a mirror every now and then.

The living environment of both Brian and Lucien is anything but ideal. A dilapidated environment with a father who sees care as a means of gaining money. He hardly has any emotional bond with his children, but he cares even more for his dogs. Not a film that derails into brutal violence, it could have happened that way.

But Molter decided to focus entirely on the brothers. Quite rightly so, by the way! A beautiful and endearing portrait. A very big 3.5*!
