Youchai plot

The introverted Xiaodou works as a postman in Beijing. One day he has to take over a neighborhood from a colleague who has been fired for unknown reasons. It concerns the district with the promising name Xingfu, 'the district of happiness'. He meets an old man who tells him that the previous postman has been arrested because he read the mail from everyone in the neighborhood. Xiaodou gets an ominous premonition. At the post office he then meets Yunqing, a young inconspicuous-looking girl. She amuses herself by guessing the contents of the letters based on the handwriting on the envelope and the type of envelope being used. Driven by a desire that he cannot interpret, Xiaodou now also begins to read the mail of other people in the 'happiness district'. He discovers a prostitute, an announced suicide and a homosexual... Driven by a sense of justice and determined to turn around the failings of society, Xiaodou begins to meddle in their lives.

een wat donkere film over het leven van een chinese postbode in een arme wijk; voor mijn smaak was de verhaallijn wat mager; terwijl ik toch van beperkte verhaalllijnen houd

a somewhat dark film about the life of a Chinese postman in a poor neighborhood; for my taste the storyline was a bit thin; while I still like limited storylines
