Wutai Jiemei plot
Pre-revolutionary China, 1940s. A country girl, Zhu, is sold as a bride. She runs away and joins a touring opera company. Yuehong, the music instructor's daughter, gets along very well with Zhu and the two become "sworn sisters." After the death of Yuehong's father, the company is disbanded. Zhu and Yuehong head to decadent Shanghai where their performances are met with great success. However, the friendship between the two best friends is tested when Yuehong, drawn to material security, marries Tang, their manager. Zhu, for her part, becomes more and more involved in revolutionary activities.
