Wu Xun Zhuan plot
Wu Xun Zhuan is based on the historical figure Wu Xun (1838-1896) who promoted free education for peasant children. After enduring numerous personal dramas such as the death of his father and the suicide of his girlfriend, he comes to the conclusion that the only way poor people can empower themselves is education. He tries to get funds for free schools by saving, begging and putting in a good word with rich landlords. Meanwhile, Zhou Da, a friend of Wu, has become a rebel peasant leader. Zhou Da finds Wu's belief in education too naive and instead advocates an open rebellion. The Emperor hears the idea of Wu's free schools by rewarding him with official titles, uniforms, and other prizes. But Wu refuses to accept this official honor by pretending to be crazy and thus unable to proceed with the ceremony. While Wu continues his work, the rebels led by Zhou advance through the fields.
