A family chronicle spanning 30 years. To escape the Chinese Civil War, Kuei-mei flees single-handedly from Communist China to Taiwan in the 1950s. She marries a drinking widower and idler, takes a job as a waitress, overcoming all sorts of adversities, including a cruel boss and her new husband's unruly children.
