The old trapper Avakum accidentally shoots the son of his friend Boris while hunting. He flees into the wilderness for fear of being prosecuted for murder. In the following year, Avakum survives the harsh winter and feels completely at home in his new habitat among the animals. However, Boris knows that his son's death was an accident and travels after Avakum.
