Because I won the DVD, I watched the film. My expectations weren't too high, so the movie wasn't too bad. The story and the actors also captivated me. Especially George, who was more concerned with his garden than with his wife

Hugo Claus, author and director, presents a story in a raw style that takes place in a lower social class from the city, breaking with the classic Flemish rural films that were the majority in the 70s and 80s.

The actors are charming and yet some scenes seem contrived. Also the dialogues.

Nevertheless, atmospheric, very folksy and, true to Claus, quite crude and fascinating in any case.

The title Friday has several meanings. It is the day of Venus, the day of sex, the day of George's release. It takes place within the time frame of that one day, but much about the past is revealed through conversations and flashbacks. There is unity of time, place and action.

Even before the premiere of the play in 1969, director Hugo Claus gave the female lead role to his mistress Kitty Courbois, who adapted her language to play a Flemish woman. Frank Aendenboom was an experienced theater and TV actor who could handle the complex role of a tormented character. Quite a few well-known faces can be seen in a larger or smaller supporting role.

In terms of content, sexual taboos were broken, especially incest. The dirty laundry of an apparently well-behaved, Catholic family was aired outside. The environment is inclined to minimize or deny the scandal. The props are time-specific: a Bakelite telephone, a pinball machine, old-fashioned furniture... A funny scene is when they argue about a broken television. After all the flaring emotions, these people have to come to terms with each other and with themselves.
