Vincent Will Meer plot

Vincent suffers from Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome. When his mother dies, he wants to fulfill his mother's last wish, to see the sea one more time. With her ashes in a tin can, he flees from his nursing home and sets off in the director's stolen car for the coast of Italy. He is accompanied by an illustrious company: a young woman with anorexia and an obsessive-compulsive disorder. The pursuers are of course not long in coming. The Chief Inspector and Vincent's father do everything they can to get the escaped 'prisoners' back into the clinic. This will be the start of a turbulent adventure...

The film actually starts off quite promisingly, but unfortunately, it chooses the easy way out far too often. For instance, the father is far too unsubtle (as is the psychologist, by the way), and that erodes credibility. Just as Marie has far too much flesh on her bones for an anorexia patient on the verge of death, and Vincent's tic is scripted in perfectly. It's a bit of a shame. The film isn't boring, but it's just as unconvincing.

A likeable feel-good film that shows parallels with Hasta La Vista!, although this is a road movie featuring young people with mental disorders instead of disabled people. A story about people who are viewed as mentally impaired patients and want to transcend themselves and prove to their loved ones that they are capable of much more than what is thought of them. Vincent, who suffers from Tourette's, particularly catches the eye. The drama predominates, but there are also comedic moments.

A layered and successful road movie about three teenagers who come with an instruction manual, who manage to hold their own despite their shortcomings thanks to their growing solidarity. A tragicomedy with substance.

Remade as The Road Within (2014), which is also certainly worth watching.
