“Never show weakness, the only pain that matters is the pain you inflict.”

High school football is practically a religion in some parts of America. Varsity Blues demonstrates that this phenomenon can have more than just positive consequences. A tough coach, overly fanatical parents, playing too long through injuries, and boys who are adored after a win, but are just as easily shunned or forgotten after a loss or injury.

Varsity Blues doesn't go very deep, but it does showcase all these aspects. The cast includes many familiar faces, with Voight (as a tough coach) and Van Der Beek excelling. Lester and Caan provide humorous sidekicks, and Smart offers a compelling love interest. We saw the impact football can have on such a community in the excellent television series Friday Night Lights, and Varsity Blues also captures this effectively. The positive aspects, as well as the many negatives.

A decent film in which a quarterback successfully fills in for his injured teammate. A fairly typical high school American football movie with rather predictable characters. The storyline is a bit slow to get going and there's not much substance to it. But it certainly doesn't get boring. A great, rock-oriented soundtrack, and the cast makes the most of it. A small 3.0 stars.

A cheesy, cheesy MTV movie. It couldn't be more American. A town with a Main Street, American football, high school parties with drinking games, and so on. Thankfully, it's not prudish, as you sometimes see in the genre. James van der Beek is quite goofy. Entertaining!
