Gervais is an old man whose days are numbered. He has made a pact with Death whereby he must designate, within the Duvernay family himself, who is to die the next day. It is a formidable family, because three members have already tried to poison the old man, in order to take his inheritance. After several hesitations, Gervais finally sacrifices his clear conscience.
