After the end of the Second World War, crane operator Hans Richter returns to Berlin. He is lucky, his house may have been damaged but is still standing. The uncertain future and the daily struggle of his neighbors, such as the widow Edith Schröder, makes him decide to enter the dark world of black trading. Despite the fact that he spins his own yarn, he thinks he is doing the right thing, until his son Werner returns from the war and makes it clear to him that he is doing the wrong thing. There is a rift between father and son.
