With no apparent charge, young Antonia Berger is exiled to a Soviet labor camp after a five-minute trial. After years of exile, she is unexpectedly released in 1952. She returns to the German Democratic Republic with her seriously ill 11-year-old daughter. She gets an apartment, seed money and a good job. However, she must sign a nondisclosure agreement about her history.
