Summer 1933 in South Philly. 12-year-old Gennaro lives alone with his mother and grandfather. His grandfather sits in his chair all day and has a quarter firmly in his hand. Gennaro would like to have the coin for the cinema. Grandpa has promised it to him, but has no intention of giving it until things are settled with a woman from the past.
