The Masons aren't good for anything. They are drunks, they steal and cheat and they are a burden to the community. The government is therefore prepared to pay the family a lifelong maintenance fee on the condition that they are all sterilized. The family agrees, except for the eldest daughter Alice, who plans to get married and start a family of her own. She fled the state head over heels. However, the police launch a manhunt to force her to be put under the knife.
