An old provincial tanner can no longer compete with the larger companies to which all his customers leave. He is unable to modernize because he does not have the money to do so. He also feels incapable of learning new techniques. His situation can be recognized in the lives of other villagers. It is in perspective with the conservative behavior of the villagers, who cannot adapt to capitalism.
