Single mother Dottie Ingels sells beauty products in a large department store, but dreams of a career as a comedian. When she receives a small inheritance, she decides to try her luck and moves to New York with her two daughters. After only a few small appearances, she is noticed by the talent hunter Arnold Moss. But as Dottie becomes more popular, her two daughters feel increasingly left alone.
