The Water Gipsies plot

Jane Bell has lived with her father and sister on an old barge in the Thames since the death of their mother. Jane wishes her life were more like a movie. The reality is that she is courted by the speechless skipper Fred Green and cleans the studio of local artist Bryan, with whom she is hopelessly in love. When her father loses his job and her sister takes up with a wealthy young gambler, she becomes engaged to Ernest, a man with communist ideals.
