Young Mary Dugan awaits her release from reform school. She is held against her will for longer, for throwing ink at a very unpleasant teacher. Mary manages to escape and goes to Los Angeles to go into hiding with her stepfather, but he turns out to have died after a traffic accident, before they could talk to each other. Despite the fact that it wasn't his fault, the driver of the car offers Mary a job as a stenographer in his company. Mary quickly makes a career in this firm and falls in love with George Blake, the firm's attorney.
