In the late 1960s, young people enjoy themselves on Malibu beach with plenty of romance opportunities and few responsibilities. Denny McGuire is a beachgoer without any ambition. His roommate Collie Ransom is a professional tennis player who has many admirers there. Denny is attracted to Vickie Cartwright, an actress without many commissions, and would like her to become his permanent partner. But Vickie adores fleeting, meaningless sexual encounters with men she meets on the beach or during the few acting jobs that come her way. However, after a violent incident, the film takes a different turn. Denny pulls himself together and decides to become a more responsible man by taking a job in a hardware store. Choo-Choo Burns, a lost jazz pianist, also works in that shop. Choo-Choo becomes Denny and Collie's next roommate.
