"Your Applause Will Resound Like the Thunder in the Hills!"
Stranger David Howitt comes into contact with mountain people in the Missouri hills and is taken in by a family. David is nicknamed The Shepherd because of his gentle and friendly nature. Years before, his son betrayed a mountain dweller's daughter, and The Shepherd hopes to pay for his mistake. However, when a persistent drought threatens the mountain people with starvation and destruction, they lose faith in "wonderman" The Shepherd and mock him.
