"Love will bring you home."
Suicidal American Arthur Brennan one day leaves for Japan to visit "Aokigahara," a mysterious forest also known as "the Sea of Trees." Every year people go there to deliberate about life and death. Once Arthur has found the perfect place to commit suicide, he meets Takumi Nakamuri, a Japanese man who also no longer sees the point of life.

The setting is what particularly draws me to this film. After seeing "The Forest," starring Nathalie Dormer and others, I decided to do some research on Aokigahara, aka the "Suicide Forest."
In the process, I found this film. In it, we follow Arthur. Arthur is an American man visibly struggling in life. He decides to travel to Japan with the goal of ending his life. Once there, he meets a Japanese man, and together they wander through the woods.
You really shouldn't want to know more; it really detracts from the film. Let the plot twist at the end surprise you.

Aokigahara has become a well-known location. In recent years, quite a few films have been released in which the forest plays a prominent role, across various genres. It's a unique location, and with Gerry in mind, you can't help but have some expectations. But those expectations are absolutely not met.
The Sea of Trees has become an overly sentimental drama. One where the acting is very ponderous, the plot collapses under the weight of the drama (with Watts' actual death as the climax – I have no idea what it is about those kinds of scenes, but somehow they're always filmed in such a way that the surprise is lost from the start), and some revelations at the end are simply too cheesy to be true.
But this film is actually defined by one particular choice: Ken Watanabe as the Japanese actor. It's a bit of a shame for the man; he's not the worst actor (though he's often rather lackluster), but I would never cast him in such a role again as a director. It's an incredible laziness.
The skeleton of an interesting film is certainly present, there are also a few moments where it seems to break through, but never for very long and cheap sensationalism is always lurking around the corner to immediately destroy any atmosphere that has built up.
