The Scapegoat plot

In 1952, schoolteacher John Standing meets aristocratic Johnny Spence, who turns out to be his perfect doppelganger. After a night of drinking heavily, John awakens with a hangover, finds that Spence has disappeared and left him as his replacement. John "inherits" a mansion with a bedridden, drug-addicted mother, his wife Frances, his disdainful sister Blanche, daughter Mary Lou and two mistresses, one of whom is married to his brother Paul.
