When his widowed father Bart Connors decides to remarry and go on a honeymoon, lonely 10-year-old Jackie Connors is sent to his grandfather's horse ranch, "Captain" Chris Connors, to spend the summer. Jackie, whose mother died when he was three, suffered a crippling bout of polio the same year, which has led to a strong bond with his dog Hansel, whom he considers his only friend. Shortly after Jackie's arrival, strong-willed Leslie Macdonald arrives at the ranch with her thoroughbred North Wind.
