The young couple Jean Leonnec and Marise La Noue in love are oppressed at home because their parents disapprove of the relationship. They therefore feel compelled to leave the parental home and then flee to Paris together. After they arrive in Paris, Jean leaves Marise alone for a short time to arrange their wedding. But then Jean is arrested for theft from his father Hugo Leonnec. As a result, the two are irrevocably separated. Marise and Jean, like the low social class of French society, now have to survive in the slums of Paris with hard labor and they are also desperately looking for each other.
