The Poverty of Riches plot

"The Story of Modern Married Life."

Katherine Holt marries John Colby and wants to have children, but her husband wants to wait until he has achieved further financial and social success. For example, Katherine gives her affection to the children of Grace and Tom Donaldson. John is successful and enters wider social spheres, but he still refuses her request for children and neglects the house on business. Not much later, a former suitor, Phillips, appears and proposes that Katherine divorce her husband.
