The Penitent plot
Since his marriage, Ramon Guerola has lived in the mountains and is a Penitenté (a sinner who atones for his sins and thus pays his 'debt' to God on the way to eternal life). Each year, the villagers select men to act out the crucifixion of Christ who, by strength and God's will, may survive the ritual. His wife does not want the man to participate in this because if he survives the ordeal, the man must live the rest of his life in celibacy. Then his friend Juan Mateo arrives, who spent years in prison and everything changes.
