The Mill on the Floss plot

In the early 1800s, two families in Lincolnshire battled each other over water rights. The miller Tulliver refuses to relinquish his water rights to the lawyer Wakem. The legal battle also affects Maggie, Tulliver's daughter, who has fallen in love with Philip, Wakem's kind-hearted son. When Maggie's good name threatens to be dragged through the mud, Philip stands up for her.
