The Love Girl and the Innocent plot

In a prison camp in the Soviet Union, most people are incarcerated for violation of Article 58; promoting anti-Soviet comments or propaganda. The prisoner Nemov is an honest man who is serving a 10-year prison sentence for violation of this article. He works as a production manager and does what he can to help the sometimes mistreated and malnourished fellow inmates. When the new female prisoner Lyuba arrives, he falls in love with her. However, Lyuba has sex with the camp doctor Mereshchun, in exchange for better food and living conditions. When the evil Khomich arrives at the camp, Nemov's position in the camp is threatened.
