The Lonely Trail plot
Though he fought for the Northern States in the Civil War, Capt. John Ashley (John Wayne) after returning to his hometown, asked for help by the Texas governor. The appointed law enforcement officer, Adjutant General Benedict Holden (Cy Kendall), terrorizes the local civilian population. His men steal and loot under the banner of legal authority. To undermine Holden's power, Ashley begins recruiting men among Holden's troops.
