The Light plot
"To the Light! This is the toast the lovers drink. But in their hearts they know they are drinking to darkness and sin."
Blanchette Dumonde is known as "the meanest woman in Paris" because she consorts with her wealthy lover Chabin instead of participating in the war effort. When she meets the sculptor Etienne Desechette, he asks her to pose for him, haunted by the great soul he sees hidden in her face. Although Chabin angrily refuses, Blanchette, touched by Etienne's words, tries to become a nurse but is rejected by a hospital official. Furious, she goes with Chabin to an Apache club, where she flirts with Auchat, the roughest of the dancers, and takes him home when the den is raided.
