The Legion of the Condemned plot
"A toast to those who laugh at death."
During World War I, four young men from different walks of life enlist as pilots for the French squadron known as 'The Legion of the Convicted'. Essentially, all four are runaways: for the law, for love, and for themselves. When forced to carry out a suicide mission, the four men draw cards to see who will fly to near-certain doom. After his best friend Byron Dashwood is killed in a dogfight, Gale Price remains fatalistic after drawing the high card. As he prepares to drop a spy behind enemy lines, Gale reflects on the events leading up to this moment. In particular, Gale thinks about his ill-fated romance with Christine Charteris, who was believed to be a spy for the Germans.
