When social life in rural India falls apart in the late 1990s, journalist Manav Banerjee moves with his pregnant wife to the city of Orissa with the hope of a better life and the promise of a lucrative career. When speculation mounts that local Australian missionary Graham Staines illegally converts leprosy patients, Manav agrees to go undercover for the newspaper to investigate. What he finds is a series of revelations that are hard to fathom and even harder to explain. Manav is forced to choose between his own ambition and the truth. Ultimately, his actions give rise to a tragic event that is felt around the world.
