In his career, he is responsible for the hanging of 608 inmates, until he unexpectedly resigns in 1955. He lives a life as a greengrocer and loving husband. His obsession with becoming the 'number one ever' results in a continuation of his work as an executor and the hanging of murderers and war criminals.

Excellent film about England's most famous executioner who carried out 608 executions over a period of more than 20 years. An extremely intriguing story about a very special profession. The entire working method and way of thinking of the main character also comes across well: ambitious, respectful and with satisfaction in his work.

Beautifully sober film adaptation about Albert Pierrepoint, who was known as the "most productive executioner" of the twentieth century.

I actually watched this movie because of an article about Irma Grese (SS chief camp guard) in the newspaper today. She was also one of those hanged by Albert Pierrepoint. One could easily make a movie about her. And I'm not referring to the movie "Ilsa: She Wolf of the SS" which was more or less an erotic parody of her.

Especially the first 45 minutes with many suspensions (including the record in 7.5 seconds) was very fascinating and impressive. That is also the part where Albert Pierrepoint practices his profession as a professional without feelings and also anonymously. The last 45 minutes where Albert Pierrepoint is no longer anonymous and also becomes emotionally involved (especially since now his friend "Tish" becomes one of his victims) are strong. The role of Albert Pierrepoint was also played well by Timothy Spall. Also, incidentally, the role of his somewhat cold wife, played by Juliet Stevenson, who is mainly concerned with the money and reacts ice cold when Albert Pierrepoint explodes emotionally.

All in all, this is just a great true drama that is well put together and certainly knows how to captivate and is also quite interesting. The film is a bit short for a drama.

Solid, if somewhat anonymously directed drama about Albert Pierrepoint, the most feared but at the same time the most valued executor in Great Britain. Timothy Spall is as impressive as ever and is surrounded by an excellent supporting cast. At times quite sinister, as the subject of course suggests, especially when Pierrepoint is flown to Germany after the end of WWII to execute a large number of war criminals there, but things are portrayed fairly subtly.
