In 1933 Albert Pierrepoint follows in his father's footsteps and becomes the most feared, but also the most valued executor in the country. In his career, he is responsible for the hanging of 608 inmates, until he unexpectedly resigns in 1955. He lives a life as a greengrocer and loving husband. His obsession with becoming the 'number one ever' results in a continuation of his work as an executor and the hanging of murderers and war criminals.
