The Jilt plot

Before going to France to fight in World War I, George proposes to Rose, but she turns him down. When he comes home blind and proposes again, she does accept him. After a while, Rose realizes that she only felt pity and not love, whereupon she breaks off the engagement. George's friend, Sandy, also returns from France and he and Rose fall in love. George seems to bear no hatred and the two remain friends. One day George comes home alone from a trip and claims that Sandy has been murdered. A letter also arrives stating that George's sight had been restored weeks earlier by surgery.
