The Inspection plot
The young African-American Ellis is attracted to men and is rejected by his mother at the age of sixteen. With little future prospects, he chooses to join the navy. He does everything in his power to succeed. Amid the grueling routine days and the prejudices in his environment, he finds friendship and support. It is a place where he feels at home and his life changes forever.

Partly because his mother [Gabrielle Union] rejects him because of his homosexuality, Ellis French [Jeremy Pope] decides to enlist in the Navy, where in 2005 the “Don't Ask, Don't Tell” policy still applies with regard to to non-heteros. Well acted but unsurprising drama with the familiar humiliations and dilemmas. Autobiographical drama by director and screenwriter Bratton who probably hadn't seen An Officer and a Gentleman and/or Full Metal Jacket yet.

Immediately upon disembarking from the bus, the drill begins. “I will break you, I promise!” The reception is most cordial. The young African-American and gay Ellis does not have it easy. That much is immediately clear. He carefully hides the fact that he is gay. Within the ranks of the United States Marines Corps, such a sexual orientation is not appropriate.
However, after a banal incident in the shower, Ellis is branded gay and is mistreated by his comrades with the tacit approval of the trainers. From then on he has been the subject of ridicule and insults. With The Inspection, director Elegance Bratton tells his own story. A story that addresses intolerance, discrimination and homophobia. So don't expect too much action on the assault course. Socially critical and psychological accents predominate.
A nice film that of course features many stereotypical gay haters and has an unsurprising action. A nice film that also launches a number of characters who think less clichéd. For example, the themes are not only treated with a blunt axe, but also presented with some delicacy. The dramatic touch benefits from it and that is good for the experience. Jeremy Pope's excellent starring role helps.
The Inspection is a sympathetic film that proceeds somewhat predictably, but manages to emotionally here and there without falling into sugary sweetness.
