The Great Accident plot

Winthrop Chase is running for mayor in a town where his irresponsible son, Wint, is notorious for his drunken bouts. Wint is in love with Joan Caretall, whose father, Amos, is a major political figure. Amos fears Winthrop's power and decides to impasse him by replacing Winthrop's name on the ballot with his son's. The morning after the election, Wint awakens from a drunken stupor to find himself the mayor.
