Elnora Comstock is a lonely fifteen year old girl. She lives on a farm in the wooded Limberlost with her greedy mother Kate who hurts her. Kate despises Elnora because she is convinced that her daughter is responsible for the death of her husband Frank. Fifteen years earlier, Frank fell into the swamp and drowned because Kate, who was in labor due to the arrival of Elnora, was unable to save her husband. Elnora desperately wants to go to high school with the other local kids, but Kate refuses to pay for her textbooks and tuition. Pete Reed, who lives on an adjacent farm, secretly loves Elnora. One day, he peeks through the window of the Comstocks' house and sees Kate hiding a roll of money in a drawer. Hoping to help Elnora pay for school expenses, he steals this money.
