The Fence plot

"His Only Crime Was Trying To Survive."

Terry was abused by his stepfather as a teenager. One day the man also hit Terry's mother so hard that the boy shot his stepfather. Terry had to go to jail. There Del Resten becomes his only friend. Terry is overjoyed to learn that he and Del may be out early. But just before their release, Del dies of an overdose.
