The Eternal Mother plot
Shortly before her marriage to Howard Hollister, society woman Laura West meets Stephen Rhodes, who introduces her to the cult of the East Indian goddess Gaia, the personification of Nature, the Eternal Mother. Although Laura is fascinated, she shuns Rhodes's attempts to initiate her and transform her into his earthly personification of Gaia. Laura and Howard marry and spend a happy newlywed life, but Laura's continued interest in Gaia and her frequent daydreams about herself as the leader of the cult anger Howard, who angrily urges Laura to return to reality and her work in the slums.
