The Country Doctor plot
In the rural community where Dr. Amos Rinker practices, Opal Jones and Joe Harding's affections are thwarted by the boy's father, Ira, who despises Opal's mother as a sinful woman. Feeling redundant, the woman commits suicide. Ira then threatens to have Opal and her brother Sard put in the poorhouse, but Amos takes them in, thereby incurring Ira's displeasure.
