The Claw plot
Mary Saurin visits her brother Richard, a British commissioner in South Africa, and soon becomes engaged to Major Anthony Kinsella. When the natives revolt, Kinsella's troops are all killed and he is captured. Maurice Stair returns with the news that Kinsella's dying wish was for Mary to marry Maurice. She complies, but soon discovers that Maurice has fled the battle in fear and that Kinsella is still alive.
