The Burden of Proof plot
Elaine is a young lady who falls in love with statesman Robert in Washington, DC. After his family lost their fortune, Robert's mother was forced to write a column for a newspaper. The newspaper's owner is German spy William Kemp. This thwarts Elaine's relationship with Robert by making her look like a spy. When Robert becomes convinced just before their wedding that Elaine is a spy, he cancels the wedding.
