The Broken Cord plot

David Norwell adopts a four-year-old boy of Native American descent. However, David has little contact with his son, named Adam. In the end it turns out that Adam suffers from an alcohol syndrome that has damaged his brain. He contracted this disease before his birth due to the excessive drinking of his biological parents.
